Heather Weigand serves as the Life After Exoneration Program’s Director of Client Services and New Programs.  She began modeling policy and service provision in 2005 for the exonerated in the Western Region of the United States.  Currently, her efforts are directed to developing and providing exemplary services to the exonerated in California and Texas.  This includes delivery of a regional policy & service model that can be replicated in states with the highest population of exonerees.  In conjunction with her co-director, she oversees the board building, development, fund raising, advocacy, public education and lobbying efforts for this unique grass roots organization.  Heather incubated the very first “Council of the Wrongfully Convicted”, an exoneree-led council and leadership program and still acts as its primary advisor.

The Life After Exoneration Program is the only national organization dedicated to helping survivors of wrongful conviction re-enter society and rebuild their lives. The Life After Exoneration Program is working to ensure that exonerees have access to badly needed services, and is helping to build a community of the exonerated. The Life After Exoneration Program is supporting policy reform on behalf of the exonerated.

Calvin Willis was convicted and sentenced to life without the possibility of parole for a rape he did not have anything to do with. He spent the next twenty-two years in Louisiana's infamous Angola State Prison. The dedication of his family and long-time advocacy from the Life After Exoneration Program helped secure DNA testing of the physical evidence in the case. DNA testing excluded Mr. Willis as the perpetrator, and he was set free.

Jack Girardi, Partner at Girardi & Keese, one of America’s Finest Law Firms, and lawyers, as always, brings out the most important key elements to the success of today’s guests. He and his firm have been dedicated to working hard and getting the best possible recovery for its clients.

Dick Thornburgh discusses his career as Governor of Pennsylvania, Attorney General of the United States under two presidents and the highest-ranking American at the United Nations during a public career which spanned over 25 years. He is currently counsel to the national law firm of Kirkpatrick & Lockhart LLP, resident in its Washington, D.C. office.

Elected Governor of Pennsylvania in 1978 and re-elected in 1982, Thornburgh was the first Republican ever to serve two successive terms in that office. He served as Chair of the Republican Governors Association and was named by his fellow governors as one of the nation's most effective big-state governors in a 1986 Newsweek poll.

During his service as Governor, Thornburgh balanced state budgets for eight consecutive years, reduced both personal and business tax rates, cut the state's record-high indebtedness and left a surplus of $350 million.  Under his leadership, 15,000 unnecessary positions were eliminated from a swollen state bureaucracy and widely recognized economic development, education and welfare reform programs were implemented.  Pennsylvania's unemployment rate, among the ten highest in the nation when he was elected, was among the ten lowest when he left office.

As Attorney General, Thornburgh played a leading role in the enactment of the Americans with Disabilities Act.  He also took vigorous action against racial, religious and ethnic "hate crimes", and his office mounted a renewed effort to enforce the nation's anti-trust and environmental laws. During his tenure as Attorney General, Thornburgh twice personally argued and won cases before the United States Supreme Court.

All told, Thornburgh served in the Justice Department under five Presidents, beginning as United States Attorney in Pittsburgh (1969-1975) and Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Criminal Division (1975-1977), emphasizing efforts against major drug traffickers, organized crime and corrupt public officials.  In August 2002, he was appointed Examiner in the WorldCom bankruptcy proceedings, the largest ever filed, to report on wrongdoing and malfeasance that led to the company's downfall.

Throughout his career, he has traveled widely, visiting over 40 countries and meeting with leaders from Canada, Mexico, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Russia, Japan, China, Taiwan, Korea, Australia and Central and South America.  He served as an observer to Russia's legislative (1993) and presidential (1996) elections, is Chairman of the U.S. Committee for Hong Kong and is a member of the board of advisors of the Russian-American Institute for Law and Economics.

A native of Pittsburgh, Thornburgh was educated at Yale University, where he obtained an engineering degree, and at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law where he served as an editor of the Law Review.  He has been awarded honorary degrees by 31 other colleges and universities.  Thornburgh served as Director of the Institute of Politics at Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government (1987-1988) and was a visiting lecturer at the George Washington University Law School (1995).  He has lectured on over 125 other campuses, including Moscow State University, debated at the Oxford Union and frequently appears as a guest commentator on network news and talk shows.

Kirk F. Lechtenberger is an aggressive and passionate criminal defense lawyer who brings more than 17 years of experience to all of his cases, whether he is handling a drunk driving or drugs offense case or focusing on a computer and technology defense.

As a former prosecutor, Kirk has tried more than 250 cases in federal and state courts. He has a unique insight into criminal matters and the legal system, and is Board Certified in Criminal Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.

Jack Girardi, Partner at Girardi & Keese, one of America’s Finest Law Firms, and lawyers, as always brings out the most important key elements to the success of today’s guests. He and his firm have been dedicated to working hard and getting the best possible recovery for its clients.

America’s #1 Talk Radio Show Presents

David N. Bigelow
Partner, Girardi Keese

Hosted by Steve Murphy
www.lbishow.com
Phone: 818-762-6800

David N. Bigelow discusses two recent verdicts for childhood sexual abuse by agents of the Masonic Home for Children in California.  The latest verdict included the first punitive damage award ($12.5 million) in Los Angeles County under California’s recent statute reviving childhood sexual abuse claims. The award quickly followed the jury’s unanimous findings that Masonic Homes of California knew or had reason to know that Wayne Rose, now of Newport Beach, California, was committing unlawful childhood sexual abuse, yet failed to take any reasonable steps to prevent further abuse of the plaintiffs. These three plaintiffs were the second trial group out of fourteen total plaintiffs who claim they were sexually abused by Masonic Homes of California’s employees and agents while they resided in the Masonic Home for Children in Covina from the late 1960s through the 1990s. The plaintiffs in the first trial in October, 2006, 7 year old girls at the time of the abuse in the late 1960s, were awarded more than $3.5 million dollars by a jury that unanimously found Masonic Home knew or had reason to know the Home’s agents or employees were molesting child residents. At the conclusion of the liability and damages phase of the bifurcated trial, the jury awarded $2,814,600.00 in compensatory damages to the plaintiffs and found Masonic Home had acted with malice, oppression or fraud in its reckless disregard of the plaintiffs’ rights, authorizing the imposition of punitive damages. After a brief punitive damages phase, the jury awarded $9,750,000.00 equally divided among the three plaintiffs.

David also specializes in the areas of personal injury, business torts and product liability litigation against many of America’s largest corporations, including General Motors, Sempra Energy, Wyeth, Pfizer, Merck, BMW, Coldwell Banker, Bayer, Blue Cross and Michelin.  In 2004, he was co-lead trial counsel in the only case tried in California concerning the diabetes drug Rezulin.  From 2003 to 2006, Mr. Bigelow oversaw the firm’s mass tort litigation against the manufacturers of the pharmaceuticals Baycol, Rezulin, Fen-Phen and Vioxx.  He has obtained multi-million dollar verdicts in both product liability and personal injury cases. David holds an undergraduate degree from Whittier College and a law degree from the University of San Diego School of Law.
